The Biography of Larry Hubbard

Hubbard received his bachelor's degree in education from the University of Maryland, with a concentration in drama and film. He was a three time letter winner and All-American midfielder his senior year on the Terapins 1973 national championship lacrosse team. He received his Masters Degree in Educational Foundations in 1978 and a second Masters Degree in Physical Education in 1980 from the University of Delaware while serving as the assistant men’s lacrosse coach for four years. From Delaware, Hubbard move onto UMBC in Baltimore, Maryland where he was the Associate Head Coach for Men’s Lacrosse and Instructor in the Physical Education Department from 1981-1984. He moved to the Lynchburg area in 1984 where he served as the head lacrosse coach and assistant professor in physical education at Lynchburg College.

In the summer of 1984, Mr. Hubbard started the first of two enterprises within the SW region of Virginia to respond to growing health concerns and individual training demands for the area’s aspiring athletes. Kinetx, Inc. was a health promotion and wellness screening business from 1984-88. During this same time, Mr. Hubbard created and hosted a weekly cable television program, Recipes for Success, which ran for six years in the New River Valley area of Virginia. Each week highlighted a guest who would present a new recipe for success in one of four areas: mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual success.

Shortly after the summer of 1988, a decision was made to re-define Hubbard’s efforts to work with top regional junior athletes. In 1988 he began Sports Concepts, a consulting service for the design and implementation of sophisticated training paradigms for a variety of sport activities in the southeast region of the United States from Virginia to Florida. It was during this time that the concepts for maximizing performance and playing in the zone began to emerge as a significant component to athletic performance. Now both the mental training and physical training were becoming equally important.

During 1984-1994, Hubbard coached tennis at local area middle schools and served as the varsity girl's tennis coach at Seven Hills School and Amherst County High School. Hubbard is a certified USPTR and USPTA Tennis Professional and was the director of tennis and head tennis pro at Peakland Swim and Tennis Club in Lynchburg for 10 years. Mr. Hubbard's tennis experience includes the formation of the Southwest USTA Junior Area Training Center for rising junior players throughout Southwest Virginia and West Virginia. He served as the organization's administrator and player development coach. Other positions he held during this ten year period include president of the Lynchburg Tennis Patrons Association for three years, co-director of the Lynchburg Junior Tennis Tournament for four years and director of marketing for the 35th Central Virginia Invitational Tennis Tournament (CVITT).

Hubbard was hired by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia as the Head Men’s Tennis Coach and Assistant Professor within the department of Sport Management in the summer of 1999. Hubbard was also instrumental in the addition of the women's tennis program in the fall of 2000 as the program became the 17th intercollegiate athletic program offered at Liberty and first addition since 1993. He also served in an administrative role from 2001-2005 as the Associate Athletic Director and Director for Student Athlete Academic Services (SAAS) while still handling the daily operations for both the men and women’s tennis programs.

What started out as a part-time supplement to Mr. Hubbard’s career in college education and college athletics during the summer months, has grown into a mission for a national outreach to high school and college age students interested in maximizing their potential to succeed in a chosen field as they transition from each stage of educational development.
